Kombucha, alcohol and pregnancy – what to know

Kombucha is a fermented drink, so it naturally contains trace amounts of alcohol. Here is how much there is and who should be cautious.

How much alcohol does kombucha contain?

Alcohol forms naturally as yeast ferments sugars. In Nasza Kombucha the content is usually 0.2 to 1.2%. Commercial kombucha sold as a non-alcoholic drink usually contains below 0.5%. Homemade kombucha can be stronger, as fermentation is harder to control.

Kombucha and driving

With a typical chilled serving the amount of alcohol is trace-level, but people who are especially sensitive or who avoid alcohol should keep this in mind.

Kombucha during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Because of the trace alcohol and caffeine and the lack of conclusive studies, pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to be cautious. The safest course is to consult a doctor.
